Embracing Our Spiritual Essence: Beyond Limitations

Energy. It is a word that, depending on the tradition from which we speak, can take on different meanings. Some call it chi. Within the Christian tradition, it is often referred to as the Holy Spirit. It is that in which we live, move, and have our being. It permeates everything. If you wanted a visual representation, imagine an aquarium filled with water. Now, picture dropping small amounts of different powdered food dyes into the water—eight, nine, or even ten colors. As the grains of powder enter the water, they begin to swell and move. You would not say that these grains exist as separate entities; instead, they merge with the water, coloring it. This is a way to conceptualize how energy works.

We are like those grains of food dye. Initially distinct, we dissolve into the greater whole. We are spirit, just as the dye becomes part of the water. Each of us colors the spirit in a unique way, and that uniqueness gives rise to our individual soul existence. However, despite this individuality, we are all part of the same amorphous mass of energy. It is crucial, though, to understand that even when we say we are swimming in energy, we must not perceive ourselves as separate from it. We are not merely in it; we are it.

This is why I use the analogy of the food dye rather than that of fish swimming in water. A fish, though immersed in water, remains distinct from it. A fish can be removed from the water, but the water is not what it is. We, however, cannot be removed from spirit because we are spirit. We exist within it and as it. Each of us brings a unique experience and expression of this energy.

I highlight this today because we often limit ourselves through false beliefs. We believe we are separate beings, disconnected from one another. We believe that race, culture, or nationality creates hierarchies of superiority or inferiority, but all of these are illusions. Another false belief is that certain individuals possess spiritual abilities that others do not. The truth is that we all have access to the same spiritual power. The only difference lies in whether or not we pay attention to this aspect of ourselves.

This is an important realization because we are increasingly giving our power away. One of the most profound aspects of Jesus’ ministry was his ability to empower others. When he healed, he often said, Your faith has made you well. This was not a denial of his role but a testimony to the individual’s capacity for transformation. Jesus did not impose healing upon anyone; rather, he created the space for people to trust, to believe in the possibility of their own wholeness. In daring to believe, they made their own healing possible. This is a fundamental truth: we create our own realities.

Yet, when we are unaware of the spirit that flows in and through us, we limit ourselves. We assume that we need something external to change our reality when, in truth, it is our own willingness and belief that shape our experience. No one can bestow something upon us that we do not already possess. All spiritual power is accessible to us at all times.

In the physical realm, there are differences—some have talents and skills that others do not. But when it comes to matters of the spirit, there is no separation and no hierarchy. A Course in Miracles states that there is no degree to the miraculous. Yet, we are conditioned to believe in hierarchies, in separation, in limitation.

The invitation today is to remove these limitations, to trust and be open to the possibilities before us. We must move beyond the small self we have constructed and recognize the vastness of our true nature. This is why practices like yoga, meditation, and stillness are powerful. They strip away restriction and limitation. They guide us inward, where we discover the vast space of our true being. In that vastness, we awaken to infinite possibilities.

Spirit. Chi. Energy. Motion. This is who we are. The key is to learn how to be in touch with the source. When we are, we gain access to everything. This is why scripture teaches, Ask, and it shall be given; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened. These words are not simply instructions; they are declarations of spiritual law. Asking from a place of abundance, seeking with the knowledge that what we seek is already present, knocking with the awareness that the door is already open—these are the attitudes that manifest our reality.

But to do this, we must first remove our limiting beliefs. I am not able. I am not worthy. I am not enough. I cannot do this. This is impossible. All of these are falsehoods. Instead, we must replace them with affirmations of truth: There is enough. There is abundance. All things are possible. I am divine. I am of the source. I am capable. I am full. I am complete.

These ways of being do not create miracles; they simply allow us to perceive reality as it truly is. What we call miracles are not deviations from nature; they are expressions of nature unhindered by limitation. Everything is energy. Everything is spirit. Everything is chi. We live in it. We move in it. We have our being because of it.

Let us then be open. Let us use it. Let us recognize that energy exists for a purpose—the purpose of bringing forth the fullness of the Divine within and through us.
